The next frontier in the fight against cocaine dependence appear to be in a vaccine that promises to reverse the effects of this drug consumption, says the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).
“It’s not a miracle treatment, or revolutionary as were other shots in your area, but it will be a valuable tool to help families and patients who are truly motivated to kick the habit,” he told BBC Alessandro Pirona, treatment expert EMCDDA of addictions.
Like any other, the cocaine vaccine is intended to raise antibodies to inactivate the effects of invaders.
In this case, leads to the formation of antibodies that bind to molecules of cocaine in the blood, thus allows the enzymes naturally present in the organism become an inactive molecule.
In other words, no matter the amount of cocaine that is provided, the patient will feel no effect.
But unlike vaccines such as polio, not only one dose is needed for immunity for life, but a lengthy treatment that can take six to eight weeks to achieve a temporary immunity.
